In case our previous entry hasn’t convinced you to pick up a scrub and start prepping for a medical residency, here’s another list of how much you would realistically earn as a Grey’s Anatomy doctor.

Mark Sloan and Jackson Avery: Plastic Surgeon – $444,029 a year

Plastic surgeons get a bad rap. Often, we see plastic surgeons earn massively from the insecurities of others by working on breast enhancement, lip filling, liposuction, and such. Thus, in a world that is celebrating positive body image, they are seen as shallow and greedy opportunists that make money from the miseries of others.

Any fans of the show would know this is far from the truth with Dr. McSteamy, and later Dr. Avery. Both are compassionate, going so far as stopping a patient from getting breast-enhancing surgery just because her boyfriend wants her to. Still, they prove that it takes a lot of skills to be a plastic surgeon, thus being able to minimize scarring for any wounds.

Realistically, a plastic surgeon can earn up to $444,029 a year, even more if they own a private practice.

Owen Hunt and April Kepner: Trauma Surgeon – $414,100 a year

Trauma surgeons are lifesavers, literally. They perform emergency surgeries on critical patients, keeping them alive before any plans of treatments are introduced. Thus, if you see a trauma surgeon, chances are you are in the emergency room and the patient is probably suffering from critical injuries or acute illness.

For trauma surgeons like Dr. Hunt and Dr. Kepner, a cool and level head is needed, as critical injuries require an instantaneous level of reflex when deciding on treatment, as a critical patient’s conditions can worsen very fast. Trauma surgeons must also be quick on their feet and decide which surgeons of staff to keep on the case to ensure their patient survival.

As a trauma surgeon, you can make up to over $562,000 per year, along with attractive benefits.

Callie Torres – Orthopedic Surgeon: $473,928 per year

If you like to break bones, then a career in orthopedic surgery is definitely the right path for you. Dealing with the conditions of bones, joints and the way the body moves, orthopedic surgeons are directly responsible for your life quality. Most orthopedic surgeons will try a nonsurgical option, such as medicine or rehabilitation first, before moving to surgery to correct a condition.

Dr. Torres, despite having been sued for malpractice, is one of the top orthopedic surgeons in Seattle. Orthopedic is a very rewarding specialty for many surgeons, as their patients often suffer significantly for a long time due to aging or past injuries, and the surgeons are the only one that can relieve them of their pains. They also need to work with other specialists, like therapists, rehabilitation doctors and pain management specialists to optimize treatment.

Even when they aren’t a ‘top surgeon’, orthopedic surgeons are still very well paid, with a salary of around $473,928 per year.

Dr. Ben Warren – Anesthesiologist: $450,400 per year

Before switching to be a surgeon, Dr. Warren was an anesthesiologist. That means he specializes in perioperative care and essentially is responsible for keeping patients comfortable and sedated when they are under the knife. There are many branches of Anesthesia, such as regional anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, critical care medicine, cardiothoracic anesthesia, chronic pain, and anesthesia research.

While not directly responsible for surgery, anesthesiologists are just as important as surgeons, as they help ward the patient against the pains during surgery. Being one of the highest-paying careers as of 2021, a career in Anesthesia is no doubt lucrative. Averagely, an anesthesiologist makes $450,400 per year, just as good as any surgeon in the show.

While an actual surgeon might neither be as eventful nor dramatic as a Grey’s Anatomy doctor, it is still a very fulfilling job. This is because you are actively healing people and making their life better. If that is not a strong enough incentive for you, then the salary should.

No matter your specialty, a career in Medicine is very well-paid. So if you are interested in a career in Medicine but have no idea where to start, our website offers a detailed list of Medical Specialties to research from.
